Killing Joke is good, although very dark. One trade I LOVE is called Obsidian Age. It's DC-verse and a JLA (Justice League of America) arc, so there's a family of characters. You'll probably love Kyle (the Green Lantern at the time). That's when I fell in love with him. Wonder Woman, Bats, Supes, Flash... they're all there (even Zatanna!). Tower of Babel is another awesome arc that's offered as a trade. You can get both for pretty cheap as well. Try Mile High comics, they usually have a good assortment. I think Amazon has it as well. Both are very enjoyable and since their "arcs", you can jump right in.
